I finally picked one up today at Walmart for $315. I went with the 21" barrel. I already bought the Shur Shot stock and a Carlson's .575 choke tube. I'll be running Federal HW #7s in it and plan to get the pattern boards out this weekend. I will eventually get it dipped in Mossy Oak Original Bottomland. Last year I "built" an H&R youth 20 ga and fixed up a Mossberg .410 with TSS shot. I killed a gobbler with each. This could turn out to be an expensive hobby.

Only issue I'm running into is my POA. The stock puts my cheek above the rail too much. I may need to add a saddle and a red dot. I'll know after I shoot it this weekend.

I'm going to build a very similar gun for me and the kids. Looking at the Phoenix technology kicklite stock that will grow with them and reduce recoil. Still not sure on an ammo/choke combo.

I bought a youth 870 20ga with 21 in barrel for my niece years ago....but I took it back from her....it's the perfect turkey killer. Light weight...short.....deadly to 40yds. When I start climbing hills then it's my choice. She is called red ryder.....like the bb gun.

What's your choke/ammo combo?

^^^If you do not want to reload, you can get the Remington Super Full choke (.572) for $30 and shoot either Hevishot #7s, or better yet, Federal Heavyweight #7s and kill them all day long at 40 yards and in. If you want a tighter core (more pellets in a 10" circle), you can opt for a tighter constricted choke like the Indian Creek (.555), but you better hold tight on his head because it does allow much room for error.

Here's a post I made last year with 3 patterns out of an 870 youth 20. They are three different chokes with Federal Hvy Wt #7s. He killed one with it at 30 yards last year, and it never flopped. I am considering building one myself.

I started with a cheap hs strut extra full with heavyshot. It was ok. Went back to factor choke and heavy shot and it was better. I still have about 3 boxes of heavy. Once they are gone then I will try federal heavyweights.

I bought a 20 gauge 1187 off Kimber last year. It had been shortened for a smaller statured person. I put a Jebs .560 I do believe in it and it'll kill them farther than I'll shoot them. Highly doubt I ever tote a 12 gauge again.

Just dropped her off to be drilled and tapped and have the barrel and receiver cerakoted in patriot brown.

What do you have in mind for optics?

I picked up a Bushnell trs-25. I've never used optics on a shotgun so I'm curious how it will turn out.

Waiting on photos of the finished job.....bet it loooookssss nice

It's currently getting drilled and tapped and the barrel and receiver cerakoted. Should have it back in the next couple weeks. The Bushnell came in and is a sweet little red dot.

Can't wait to get her back and start shooting!

My guy called. Got her drilled and tapped, added sight rail, and cerakoted the barrel and receiver.

All that's left is adding original bottomland wrap to stocks and add the Bushnell trs-25. She's coming together nicely!
