Story: "I was hunting in a stand with my father on a farm which I have passed up all 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 year old bucks the past 4 years, when a 6 pointer and a doe came out of a thicket at the opposite end of the field at 550 yards. The 6 ran the doe for a few minutes, then she eased back in the thicket. The 6 paced in the field outside of the thicket, but would never follow her back in. I looked at my dad and told him, "there must be a decent buck in there keeping the 6 out in the field". Not 5 minutes later, this deer stepped out and tore into the smaller buck. The doe came back out and the larger buck bred her twice, then ran the 6 pointer again. After watching all this for what seemed like 15 or 20 minutes, the deer had gradually closed the distance to 400 yards (In years past I have stepped off the distances from this stand and practiced shooting at 500 yards for occasions such as this). The doe was about to leave the field, so I told Dad, "it's now or never, cover your ears", and I aimed 10 inches high and 8 inches into the wind. Holding on my target was easy as I had a stable rest. I squeezed the trigger, and the bullet struck center of mass in the kill zone, going through both lungs. He travelled 40 or 50 yards before falling."
