How many of us are guilty of breaking this commandment from Fred Bear?
Hunt deer where they actually are, not where you imagine them to be.

I do it and occasionally it works out which causes me to repeat.
Very good advice
I try to hunt extreme conditions in transitional areas to where I think they are going. I see more deer in rain storms and bitter temps than beautiful days. I tell myself only a complete moron would be out here right now but that's my best times seeing good deer, not just numbers .

I've done it the last 30 years. I even know that you should hunt where they actually are vs where you want them to be. And I still do it most of the time. The absolute definition of insanity. Lol
On my leases I used to have according to wind direction I knew which stands to hunt most times but always took my climber . On this new place at first you hunt fresh sign and then if I'm not having sightings I do a still hunt to look for fresh sign . On this new place I've moved 180 % . Seeing deer and bucks but hunting the boss ☺

I killed a Pope and Young buck in a blinding snowstorm in Illinois.
25 mph steady wind, snow blowing sideways.
He walked right by me at 20 yds, never saw me standing on the ground, drawing my bow.

Sometimes we are limited to hunt the ground we have and hope they will move through. Have tried leaving some places on my property for bedding areas, they get used some. Have managed to do ok.
No hunting words ever better spoken.
I'm kinda the same way. Small pockets of private and public, and I don't have much of private. Still gotta get out of my ruts or "favorite spots" that have produced in the past, or at certain times of the year, and move to the hot food source or funnel to it. Sometimes I gotta hunt those little "soft spots" that nobody hunts because they just don't look "deery." And sometimes the deer just aren't using the little chunk of property that I want to hunt and I need to go to another little chunk. Deer patterns change so I need to be able to as well

I'm quite certain I've hunted places that I just KNEW had deer because it looked so perfect and the reality was it had probably never seen a deer.
One could argue to hunt where they're GOING to be, which requires imagination.

I heard Fred Bear was always an open book, willing and eager to talk hunting with anybody who'd listen. I'd listen as long as he had breath to speak. A true wealth of hunting knowledge and experience.

I'm guilty of sitting the same terrain features year after year regardless of sign and not branching out as much as I should. I do it though because it works in these mountains. Sit the right terrain feature long enough and you'll shoot a good one .

Great thread and lots to be learned from the original statement! I definitely am guilty of not always hunting where they are but where I think they should be.
