Trying to get into loading my own shells. Picked a great time! haha. Recipe calls for 12g Fiocchi 3 1/2" trimmed down to 3 " and another calls for Cheddite 3" hulls. With so many going from 12 to 20 now, I was wondering if anyone had some of these they'd be willing to sell. Im gonna just start out slow and try to make one batch. With the amount I'm starting out with I can only make 16 shells ( If i dont screw any of them up). If you have some, know someone that does, or know where some might be available, I'd appreciate any lead you have on them. Thanks.

Being new to it, I didnt know if a different shell would cause different pressures, etc. So i was just going to follow it by the book. If it doesnt matter, though, I'm not married to any particular brand.

Different hulls can and absolutely will result in different pressures. In a regular field load, you're typically well within safe pressure limits so changing a hull would't present any problems. But most TSS recipes run close to, but within SAMMI pressure limits. Change the hull without testing it and you may very well end up with a load that is over safe pressure limits.

Hal Abbot is probably the most authoritative source in the world when it comes to TSS loads. Here is a thread he posted a few years ago providing the actual pressure and speed changes that resulted just from swapping hulls.

Don't change any of the components unless the load has been tested with those components.

bvoss - I have some Cheddite and Fio hulls you can have. Not sure why the load calls for trimming a 3.5" fio down to 3" instead of just using 3" hull. I think it's the identical brass/primer/hull but with a little more plastic. If there is no functional difference using 3" would be easier and I have more of them, but I also have enough 3.5s if that's what is required. Ask the man that created the load if there is any functional difference and I'll send you whichever you need.

You want all 16 of one hull, 8 and 8, or some other mixture?

Awesome, man! Let me ask Hal. I'll let you know asap.

Yep. I was wrong. Should have just looked it up. The 3" uses the Fiocchi 616 primer and the 3.5" uses the Fiocchi Magnum primer. They have even added a disclaimer about it in the manufacturer's description. No need to bother Hal. Should have known the he had a reason for specifying 3.5" trimmed down. I'll send you 3.5"

I have a trimming jig fixed up already, so I can trim them for you in less than 2 minutes. But I won't rob you of the fun if you'd rather do it yourself. Just let me know and PM me your address. I can drop them in the mail tomorrow morning.
