Grass carp question

I gotta buddy who used to wear them out with a fly rod in sub division ponds. The fish were used to eating grass clippings from the mowing crews blowing grass in the ponds. He made a bunch of "flies" using green pipe cleaners and dyed green feathers. He also made flies that looked like pieces of dog food that worked well.

You can catch em rising to willow flies or cicadas. I caught a huge one a couple years ago that was eating willow flies at dusk.
 
Caught this one last Monday on a fly rod. Biggest one I've ever caught. It ate a cicada fly

I have only Caught them on flies, not sure if they'd eat corn or not.

For a half a second I thought you were describing me, until you said that he made his own flies. I just bought some cheap dry flies that had some green on them, but I did the same fishing method that you described.

I kept one of them and pressure-cooked it to soften the bones. It was a decent-tasting fish, but not worth the trouble unless you just gotta do it once or had no other food options. I later learned that the grass carp were all infertile and cost someone a lot of money to stock into those ponds, so I never killed another one. Still, tons of fun on 4-lb line leader on a fly rod made for small fish. Pulled every inch of line out, fought me to the knot a few times.
