I've caught literally thousands of perch in my time but never with a fly rod. I had put that on my to-do list for this fishing season. What a absolute blast it turned out to be, a much different experience than traditional gear. I will most definitely be doing more of it!

what gear you use? rod, reel fly?

thats on our to-do list as well
9' 5wt. Plain ol b.h. olive wooly bugger worked just fine. Never tied on anything else but I'm sure there's plenty of other nymphs and streamers that would work. Matter of fact, I was fishing with my buddy that has the Creek Fishing Adventures YouTube channel and I think he caught some on a Prince nymph. The booger I was using was a size 10. I wouldn't worry much about the reel as long as it balances the rod well.

that's our main problem when throwing bigger flies for smallies on a 5wt.

Eli is a huge fan of his and always talks about how he wants to float a river with him some day
