Anybody have an idea of why this deer is swollen in the neck, chest area?

Very large cyst. It can heal on its own, but it certainly isn't good for the deer to have that much infection going on. Generally, it ruptures and drains on its own, or is reabsorbed, but I bet that deer isn't feeling great right now.

I had a buck like that 2 years ago. He survived but the following year his rack was odd and stunted, and he was so frail you could see his rubs and hips and shoulders. I think the winter killed him because he never showed up at all this year.

These cysts usually form because the deer ran into something sharp while running through brush, often a sharp stick. They are Nature's way of encapsulating a foreign object.

Thanks for the input yall. Never seen one like this on cam or in person, I was kind of perplexed for lack of words. Almost looks like an Implant maybe a he/she deer lol. Also maybe a button buck can't really tell.

Our cattle would get them on occasion. We would cut them with a scalpel at the bottom and they would drain for days

I know a farmer who had a cow with one that was swelled up like a basketball in the brisket, same spot as that deer. She was wild and wouldnt go up. Said he shot it with 22 long rifle from the side at the bottom if the cyst. Supposedly worked like a charm
