From a typical hunting standpoint that makes complete sense. Actually Sept 1 would be fine as you'll be less likely to get pics of bucks you'll never see during season, according to conventional wisdom. But I often find conventional wisdom is not accurate with certain bucks. Some bucks spend all year in one range. Those bucks are MUCH easier to hunt if you're somebody like me who likes targeting a specific buck. Still tough but at least reasonably possible. Other bucks leave in August and don't come back until May or June again. Those bucks are not huntable because they're not on the property during season. So for me leaving certain cams out year round helps a whole lot in deciding which buck I'm going to focus my efforts on.

For me, it's simply a matter of what I'm trying to accomplish - inventory the buck population. And when you're working with a bunch of bucks, it can be hard to tell if pictures are of the same buck when antlers are still growing very fast. In early summer, when antlers are still growing rapidly, an individual buck can look like two different animals just two weeks apart. I wait to start my inventories until early August so that I'm much less likely to mistake one buck as two different bucks due to rapid changes in antler configuration.
