I think Trippletail is what they mainly call them in Louisiana. In FL, MS, AL(where I'm from)they are called Blackfish.
It was 26.5 inches. He didn't get a weight.
I literally ran 40 miles of crab pots last Friday hitting over 200 bouys about 30 miles west of Dauphin island last Friday, and all I found were 2 undersized tripletails. Granted we had 1.5ft seas and I'm sure the big boys were ducked down, but still really disappointed I made a tripletail specific trip and was unsuccessful.
There have been some nice ones caught down here past 2 weeks. I've seen a couple in the mid 20lb range caught.
One of my favorite fish! When I needed to clear my head when I lived in FL, I would climb in my tower with a single spinning rod and run stone crab pots.
There were times when I would leave Ft. Myers and run 80-100 miles in a day only coming off plane when I saw a fish.
There is nothing better than doing this on a cold January day with bluebird skies.
We never really targeted then specifically growing up, but always check any crab buoys, pylons, floating debris on our way to and from fishing spots. I have a buddy that targets them a lot and has won a dozen or so tournaments.
