Just ordered 2 boxes of Federal HW 3.5 1 7/8 #7s for my 870. Have never tried any but did try the Long Beard #5s out last season. Wasn't the most impressed with the LBs and was probably my fault on not taking the time to properly pattern and to find the right choke. So thought I would try the HW #7s out and see if I could get a better pattern/load for my gun. I know TSS is the way to go and I have my stepson setup with them for his first year hunting, but 12s seem to not be available. So..... how are the HW 7s out of a 12gauge and any choke recommendations?

Try the Carlson's .640 non-ported extended choke tube with those Heavyweight 7's. You can thank me later.

Got any patterns? I'd be curious to see that.

Problem with that shell is that flight control wad. You will need a non-ported choke.
I know some avid turkey hunters who use these with ported chokes,
and do so because they work well for them.

If it were much an issue, it would be a liability for Federal to even sell them?

Assuming they pattern ok for you with whatever choke you're using,
imo, the Federal HW #7s (in 12 ga) are far superior to those LB #5s.

I'll look thru my patterns tonite and see if I can find them. But I tried almost every choke available and found the .640 non ported Carlson's to be the one that yielded the best patterns with that stiff wadded load. I do remember that my 3 shot average at 40 yards in a 10" circle was 167 pellets. And that was with the 3 inch load. This choke was recommended to me by Owlhoot on Old Gobbler.

Here is a post from Old Gobbler from 2 years ago by strutzone.

So you can see that using a tighter constriction choke tube to combat the stiff flight control wad gives better patterns.

That's better numbers than I'd expected.

I've not shot a Carlson choke that I've been impressed with.

I tried a .665 in my Benelli M2 using Nitro T316 yesterday. I swear I'd get better results out of my factory full. It was pathetic.

Put some Hevi-13 3.5" #7's down the pipe in an 835 today with an IC.
Lawd Ha Mercy
Prettiest 20" pattern I've looked at.
