Anybody shoot short loads any more? I was thinking of taking my boy out hunting and either him or myself would have to carry my old shotgun. It only shoots 2 3/4 shells I got a choke for it but haven't seen any shells lately and didn't know if they still made them?

I've got a box of Winchester Supreme 1 & 5/8 oz #6 2&3/4" I plan on letting my brother use on the Juvi. I am going to pattern them this week.

Like many I started turkey hunting a while back, and when I started the only gun I had was a 2 3/4" Browning A-5. I killed my first 30 birds or so with 2 3/4" #5's and had no issue killing birds at 30 yards. I shot a factory xtra full choke as well.

It will work fine, but it does have some limitations compared to newer loads and chokes.

Lots of options available, what is the max distance you think your son will shoot (estimate)?
Hopefully 20 yds and under would have to see how it patterns to see

I would have bought another shot gun if I would have known. since he got home from the military he hasn't shown much interest in hunting or guns at all for that matter

I have a older winchester 12 ga with a 28 in barrel I put a undertaker choke in and was looking for shells at walmart and didn't see any. I guess I will need to head somewhere else lol

All my dad used up until 4-5 years ago was his old 1100 with modified choke shooting Win Supreme #5s.

He killed several birds with it.

i bought my son some winchester extended range 3" #5's last year. We were patterning his gun this week at 30 yards.. After shooting the 3" shells i remembered i seen some old Federal 2 3/4 #4's in the shed that were left from 10+ years ago..We tried one of those at 30 yrds and it actually out shot the 3" shells..just experiment and see what works best for you.

Wouldnt a regular high brass "heavy game load" work? I'd assume anything within 25-30 yards would be stone dead

I used an old 1100 for several years, and killed 10-12 birds with it before I upgraded. The bore is an improved cylinder, not ideal for turkeys but it's all I had. Within 25-30 yards I could kill. Never missed or wounded one with it.

I dont even remember what shells I used. The pattern craze with htl loads wasn't around then, if it was, I didnt know about it.

Turkey hunting has changed drastically the past ten years or so.

If this is the case, you can kill them with just about any shell you put in the tube. I'd look for some heavy game load #7.5s (more pellets) and thump his head out to 30 yards all day long. Something like this would suffice and not break the bank.

I just saw a blurb in Field & Stream that reminded me of this thread. It seams that Winchester makes a Rooster XR similar to the Longbeards for pheasant loads in 2 3/4" #5 & #6 shot and it states that they would make good turkey shells in 2 3/4" guns.

Would be worth a shot if you could find them.
