I went to a spot Friday evening near where I hunted opening morning. I heard a bird gobble in that block of woods opening morning but every time I tried hunt it people were there so I'd go elsewhere. Friday evening got to the boundary and called. As soon as I did hens fired up in private and I thought I heard a gobble but wasn't sure. I waited a while and called again and heard a gobble. I knew they were too far, I didn't know the area so I went to another spot and saw nothing. I devised a plan for a morning hunt and went this morning. I believe God was helping me, because I got way of course and ended up circling back to where I wanted to be. If I hadn't I probably would have bumped him off the roost. It was super windy so i just sat and waited. When the sun was officially up I called light and 90% sure I heard a gobble way off on private. I waited for the wind to die and called again and heard it again. So I sat there and decided I'd call every 20 minutes and see what happened. Well after my second sequence, I heard what sound like a deer, person, Turkey, something larger than a squirrel over my right shoulder (of course). I kept peeking around the tree expecting deer or a Hunter but then I saw a turkey coming in fast. I made sure I saw a beard and luckily he had to pass behind some trees and undergrowth. I was able to spin to that side and after he passed a couple more trees I shot him at 25 yds or so. I explored and was back at the truck by 7:10.
If he hadn't been in such a hurry I don't think I'd have heard him.
7/8" spurs
9 1/2" beard
And 19 lbs.
