Just got home from 2 days in North MS. I disagree with the guys that say all the breeding is done before the TN opener. Thursday there was a little gobbling on the limb. None on the ground. Friday there was no gobbling on the roost and one bird gobbled twice around 7:30. We saw a bachelor group of 7 longbeards that were absolutely not interested in anything hen. It's still early. We will be going further south in MS Wednesday for 4 days. Hopefully those birds are further along. If you hunt exclusively in TN and are chomping at the bit, I don't think you are missing much just yet. But, hearing those first gobbles of 2016 was AWESOME! :tu:

Thanks guys. Good idea Catman. I'm hearing some great fishing reports and it's killing me. I'm pulling my boat out today to get it ready. I'll be fishing Sunday Monday Tuesday.

Saw a gobbler just south of Holly Springs Thursday all blown up with about 15 hens

Good luck on your 4 day hunt

Sounds like they are further along than where I was near Walnut. Hope it's on where I'll be near West Point. I used to hunt near Holly Springs. Lots of turkeys there. My girlfriend is from Holly Springs and all her family is there. Unfortunately, none of them have any hunting land. :bash:

Still a little south and west of you, but on my farm in Oktibbeha county they starting to rock a little bit. It oughta be warmed up again by the time you get there Wednesday...they oughta be getting right by then. Good luck to you.

Best of luck. Had to stop this morning right after leaving my house because Mr. Tom was in full strut with two hens in the middle of the road. I eased up, put it in neutral, and hit the pedal so the diesel exhaust rumbled and he gobbled his head off. :tu: On out in the field were three more strutting with about fifteen hens. Only bad part is I can't hunt them.

That's torture!

My birds just started breeding about a week ago. The hens have not yet initiated nests, but should any day now. Here in south Mississippi, we are usually around 3-4 weeks ahead of middle TN.

You probably saw the same gobbler I saw Thursday off HWY 78 just south of Holly Springs...

Also hunted North MS last week, birds gobbled a little Wednesday on the limb then just a couple token gobbles on the ground.
Thursday they gobble good on the limb and good on the ground until 08:00, then not another sound after that. Heck they were roosted with the hens and most of the hens waited until the gobblers had moved on before they pitched out of the trees, it was 09:00 before they hit the ground. Gobblers were down shortly after first light and hung around for about an hour gobbling before they moved on, of course I was pinned down with 40 sets of eyes still in the trees.

Friday not a single gobble on the limb or ground.

Good luck moving south, hopefully you'll get into some interested birds and yeah those gobbles were awesome...
