Well I started off Thursday on a bird that would not gobble on the roost unless I shocked him. When I found him I set up where he had been strutting and got quite. Whe he hit the ground he started gobbleing. He walked by me at about 50 yards to the other side of the flat and stood there and gobbled at everything I threw at him. I called a hen up and thought he would follow however after an hour he just shut up and disappeared. I got up and took a walk out to the point where I killed my first bird. I got to the edge of a pine thicket and called. I had one answer way out on the point. I eased through the woods and got within about 100 yrds and set up. Worked him for an hour and yep he shut up and went off the bluff into a deep draw. I went out to the point, laid on the bluff and slept for an hour. Work up about 9:30. Threw a cut and yelp series off into the draw and had 5 gobble. I sat there about 15 mins and decided if I was going to kill one it would be in that bottom. Not really wanting to, I headed off the bluff and down the hill. About 300 yrds later and almost to the bottom I set up on a rounded point and called a couple times..nothing...so I went back to sleep. I woke up about 10:30 and called once and had a bird gobble along the creek bottom about 200 yrds out. I started working and had him fired up for 30 mins then another bird started gobbleing and the one I was working shut up. I waited about 10 mins then yelped and nothing. I called hard and had him gobble about 30 yrds under the hill...he was doing the old slip in silent routine. I waited and then to my left on the little flat below me there he was. He was strutting and drumming all the way. When he started up the hill to me I put the old diamond on his head and let the benelli roar and he went flop flop. I stepped it off down hill at 55 steps. I then had a 2.5 mile hike up the creek bed and climb a hill with a 60 to 70 deg incline. I was worn out but very happy. Bird weighted 23 lbs had a 10in beard and 1 1/4 in sharp spurs. (pointed sharp). I will try and post some pics later. Hope you enjoyed my hunt. I love my Benelli.
