Got out of my dentist appointment this afternoon and had my stuff with me so I headed out the priest. First spot came up with nothing. Went to my second spot saw three hens on the field but that was it. Decided to go in deep to a place where I knew birds traditionally roost. Cross the small creek where the water was only 2 to 3 inches deep and as I started to get up the bank I can hear something running up in the woods on top. I peaked over and I saw a hen running out. It sounded like there was at least 2 to 3 birds. So I eased around calling lightly and listening. I didn't see anything or hear anything and about 45 minutes to an hour past so I headed on back to where I busted the birds up hoping they come back. I got set up in a good spot that I knew I was well hidden in and I did some light putts, clucks, and purrs then I'd scratch the leaves. First time nothing. Second sequence and I start hearing something moving behind me off to my left. I ease my head around on the tree and maybe 15 seconds later I start hearing putt, putt and purring. I froze and this hen walked within 10 feet of me. She was so close when she purred I could see the feathers on her neck vibrate. She eased on by and fed down in front of me but 20 yards. I went ahead and got my gun up on my shoulder because it wasn't there and she's going down to the creek and started drinking. At first I was going to lower my gun and look at her with my binoculars, but I heard something over to my left that sounded like a squirrel and I thought better of it. I kept watching and all of a sudden like a ghost this Oldboy pops up on a rock proud as a peacock and I let the Stoeger eat.
10 1/4 beard 7/8" Spurs weighed 18.5 lbs. Thank you Lord! Got it done after messing 2 up earlier this year.

ive had them purr when putting, pretty often, usually on the roost or at very close range when they aren't quite sure what you are.

You know I was thinking the same thing when I wrote it. However during the hunt I thought she saw me and started to putt. I honestly thought it was over, until she passed by and went back to her business. I am not sure if she did see me and start alarm putting, or if she just came in looking for the source of the calls and leaf scratching and started calling out to try to find the other bird. I know when I heard the leaves rustle behind me I turned my head on the tree to peak behind me, and she may have seen it.

Had one earlier this year on my property that was just over the property line. I walked up on her at 15 yds. I know she saw me. Started putting and then started purring walking back and forth up and down the fence line. I stood still she finally just started eating again.

I've seen a lot of turkeys do that when they see you but don't know what you are. If they really get spooked then they start the alarm putt and walk away. But if they are trying to figure you out they will cluck and purr
