My son was off from school for Easter today so I decided to take a vacation day as well. We were a little lazy this morning as we decided to sleep in a little bit when I got up to see super fog and wind. We got there about 7 this morning and complete silence. I then wished we wouldn't have slept in. :) We finally heard a bird gobble about 9:30. We made a move to get as close as we could to him but wasn't a hundred percent sure his exact location. I made a call on the Halloran mouth call, and he gobbled about 150 yards away. I was the shooter this morning as he said that he wanted to save his last tag for a few days. We set up and called again a few minutes later, and he gobbled again. I waited a few more and called again to see if he had moved and nothing. I waited a few more and gave a few yelps and purrs on the Crystal Mistress. I knew he had heard us so decided to give him the silent treatment. About five minutes later, my son wispers hear he comes. He was in some thick stuff above us about 35 yards and closing. He was kind of between where we had our guns pointed so when he went behind a tree, I made an adjustment waiting for him to come out. He stopped in plain view of my son, but I couldn't see him. I just needed a couple more steps out from behind the tree and would have a perfect 25 yard shot. That's when he whispered, I'm gonna shoot him. He wasn't looking to cut old Dad any slack. :) The bird looked away, and he moved his gun to get on him. Unfortunately, the bird caught him and turned to get out of there. That's when old Dad made a quick 30 yard shot and rolled him. My son said, "I was squeezing the trigger to shoot when you did." I said you have to be quick but besides I was supposed to be the shooter unless I didn't have a shot. He just gave a big crap eating possum grin. There's nothing like a little father and son ribbing. I am a super competitive person, not a sore loser but competitive. I think that he's gonna be just like me in that respect. It could be an interesting next few years. I did tell him that if he didn't quit ribbing me about killing a bigger bird on Saturday that I would send him out after the next one my himself. He hushed then. :tu: I love it though.

I'm really starting to like the little 20 gauge. The 12 gauge is getting really lonely in the back of the safe and will most likely stay there.

We did strike a bird for him a little later, but long story short came up empty on him. He was moving quick, and we could never really get caught up with him to get a good setup.

870 20 gauge compact
Hand rolled TSS #9
16.75 lbs
7/8 and 15/16" spurs
9 5/8" beard

Great job!

Keep on joking about sending him out by himself and he may just come back 30 mins later with a 25 lb gobbler ;)

That's awesome! He's going to be a force to be reckoned with in the turkey woods when he grows up! Keep taking him, and you'll have a hunting buddy for life.

Oh, and congrats on the bird, just icing on the cake!

That's so awesome Larry!
Congratulations.
I'm not rushing but I look forward to the day I can hunt with Thomas.
He really likes playing turkey Calls with Daddy at 2 years old and has a good head start on pot calls to hunt with already.

Great story! Congrats Larry.

That boy is ready to take the next step. If he hasn't started calling any it might be time to let him ease into it with a few clucks/yelps on a pot call during your next setup. You think he's hooked now, just wait until he participates in calling one in!

Thanks guys! I am super proud of him. All birds have been killed running and gunning in pretty steep terrain with no decoys or blinds. I just can't sit that long waiting for one, but I love to chase them. He's done a good job keeping up and sitting still at only 10 years old. He's spotted 2 of the 5 birds that we've killed first.

He's absolutely ate up with it right now. He has been practicing with a pot call, and I did tell him that with some practice this week that I'll let him try to call one in if he wants to. It doesn't matter if he messes it up or not. Besides in my opinion, it's more about when, where, and how to call than exactly how it sounds. Now, it can't always sound like nails on a chalkboard and some gobblers like certain tones, but if he can sound somewhat like a turkey, I'm gonna let him try.
