I am trying to set up a 20 Ga youth model in a Mossberg. I have bought some federal heavy weight 6 shot. I am just wondering if any of you shoot this and have an idea about a good choke tube. I have a primos tight wad. If you have other choke or shell combos that work for you I would love to hear that also. Thanks!

Yup carlsons and federal HW seem to be a perfect match. I have one for my 20g franchi.

It won't put up the 10" numbers of some others but for the price and overall pattern it's perfect.

I shoot the same combo and I like the undertaker myself. Its not ported. I use just a bead on my 500, the undertaker shoots straight and has a good tight pattern at 40 yards. The carson does well but shoots about a foot to the left.

The Fed Hevyweight is way more dense than lead and therefore caries a lot more knockdown. The 6s are definitely overkill, especially in the 20 gauge. I would, without question, shoot 7s over 6s. They will give you much better patterns because there will be a lot more pellets, and still more than enough energy.

x 2
Those particular #7's will out-penetrate a #5 lead on a turkey. I've seen them go completely thru a turkey breast at over 40 yards.

While I agree the 6's are overkill they still pattern very well in my gun and finding 7's when you need them can be a nightmare. That's why I like 6's.

I bought the 6 shot because that it is all they had. I went to get 7 and only 3 boxes of #6 on the shelf. I figured like Timberjack that I could get them to pattern and I don't get to Knoxville but on rare instances. If they don't pattern well I will have two boxes for sale cheap! That is why I ask for other possible combos. Thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it!

Are you shooting the 6s out of a 20 gauge? The #6s have 165 pellets per ounce. The 7s have 219 per ounce. So in a 1.5oz load, you get 81 more pellets going with the 7s. If you can get the 6s to pattern good enough, then they will sho'nuff smash one. But if I was going to shoot factory ammo out of a 20 -- I would search until I found the 7s and then I would stock up.

Not that THOSE HEAVYWEIGHT #6's aren't better than most #6 turkey loads in a 20 gauge . . . . . . .

MOST 20 gauge "turkey" loads contain 1 1/4 oz of (lead) shot.
These Feds contain 1 1/2 oz of "heavier-than-lead" shot.

So even though they don't contain near as many pellets as when loaded with #7's, imo, these #6's still trump all the other #6's available in a factory load. (But if I were hand-loading, I'd be using #8's, noting that many hand-loaders are using #9's.)

Shot the gun today and got a more than satisfactory pattern at 30 yds with the number 6 shot. I shot a mod choke tube based on a call I made to Federal today. I shoot the turkey head targets and got 35 pellets in the head and neck area. I also shot the federal premium copper plated load 3inch 1 5/16 oz 6 shot and it patterned better with the tight wad choke and I would definitely hunt with those also. I imagine the 7 shot would do even better and I will buy a box when I find them to see what they will do.
