I have a friend who has a friend who was ranked in he State as a recurve archer. HE IS VERY GOOD with a recurve.

One year I was VERY impressed to learn that he had taken NINE deer with his recurve bow. WOW.

After the season was over it I found out he actually shot at over TWENTY deer with his bow. He hit another half dozen or so that he did NOT find.

My feelings changed at that point.

I can wound WAY more than I want to with my compound and sights and release. I don't want to increase my chances for wounding losses.

GOOD LUCK to anyone who choses to hunt with a "stick" bow.

I personally can barely find enough time to practice with my compound 4 or 5 times per week. A recurve must take MUCH more time to get really good!!

Not sure how to take that 102. If a person only takes shots they deem to be ethical (and safe of course) as far as killing the deer goes then that is all that can be asked. Even on a "no doubt about it" opportunity to kill a deer, MANY things can still go wrong with a bow in your hand. I practice more during the season than any other time. I do not shoot much outside the season (I did shoot yearround back when I started) but I hate shooting targets. I have not shot the recurve at all this year until this week, and that was my second group at 20 yards. It is not rocket science if you have some coordination. To me the biggest thing with a traditional bow is range estimation and of course at the moment I am not shooting past 20-25 yards at a deer with a traditional setup. I have seen way to many things to pass judgement on anyone elses hunting. If they do something stupid, that might get a rise out of me, but if they are confident they can hit what they shoot at and take an ethical, safe shot, hard to argue with. I know of several people who I cannot compete with shooting at targets (did I say I hate shooting targets) but I will kill more deer than them when we are given the same number of opportunities. There is a ton more to bowhunting than being able to hit a target. I believe I am a "fair indian". When I have played paintball in a wooded course I have never lost, I am sneaky and patient.

I will add, I still screw up some every year, move at the wrong time, draw at the wrong time, quit hunting to early, shoot tree limbs I did not see, etc. I am far from the best hunter on here or anywhere, but I am one of the most persistent there is.

headhunter,
Take my statements for EXACTLY what they say. Don't read anything else in to them.
At this point in my life, stick bows are not for me. If I hunted with one, I am SURE I would INJURE deer, not humanely kill them. I hope you are different.

That said, I am CERTAIN, there are several compound shooters who probably should not even be hunting WITH A GUN, let alone a bow, of ANY kind.

Each season, I set a PRIMARY goal of not just killing every deer I shoot at with my bow, but DOUBLE LUNG shooting, EVERY deer I shoot at with my bow. And putting the deer down as QUICKLY and HUMANELY as possible, with as little suffering as possible. I've had several walk away after the shot that fell over as they were standing and looking back at my arrow, or walking away twitching their tail. Some even appeared to be feeding as they fell over. It has taken me YEARS to get here.

In actuality, I WILL some day pick up a recurve and give it a try. But not before I retire and put in a whole bunch of time on the range.

Good luck, let me know how it goes.

DAD MADE ME SHOOT RABBITS WITH A RECURVE....MAY HAVE KILLED 2 IN MY LIFE AND SCARED 6000...BUT I HAD ALOT OF FUN...DAD SAID IF YOU GOT TO HAVE THAT MUCH STUFF ON A BOW TO SHOOT IT...JUST USE A GUN. WONT PUT MY Z7 MAG DOWN FOR A RECURVE JUST YET....

I can only shoot that once or twice a day. Yesterday was my second day shooting the recurve this year. Here is my best from yesterday. I am shooting zwickey broadheads, just like my compound, I never shoot field tips.

I get a deer inside of 20 yards I believe I have a good chance.

I can put three together when im shooting good but then shoot one or two a foot high or left.I guess thats how it is shooting a recurve you can't expect to group them perfect everytime

I have shot a Matthews Q2 for over 10 years. I have always wanted to take up the recurve, but finally just decided that this was the year. I have been practicing since the early summer, and am now getting comfortable shooting, and will be taking into the woods. I will say, that my compound shooting is through the roof. I have taken it out 2 or 3 times, and the difference is amazing. I am not only hitting where I aim, but I don't shoot at the same place twice because I fear a robin hood. I never realized how bad my form was until I started shooting traditional.

To all the people who say that "someday" they want to kill one with a traditional bow, I say just go buy one. Then make sure and read Shooting the Stickbow by Anthony Chimera.

I still have a compound but my recurve is my fave, its just a old bear Grizzly with a 50# draw weight, noth'n fancy about it.
About 20 yards is my limit after that I guess the deer get a free pass, but I'm cool with that, I'd still enjoy the hunt if I had to use a squirt gun.

If any of you gents have ever had the notion to try a recurve or a long bow by all meens dont think twice, ther a blast & highly addictive, noth'n like a stik & string.
