Needless to say I am hooked. Did not shoot a bird this year but am hooked. I learned a lot and had a ton of fun. Saw more birds than I did last year (first season) and even called two birds in yesterday unfortunately they were just out of range. I even crawled up on some birds to within 15 yards and had a misfire but loved every minute of it.

I know I am opening a can of worms by asking this but I know I need to change two things, I need a good call, and I need to learn how to use it. And, I either need better decoys or I need to throw my decoys away. The birds yesterday turned away when they saw my decoys. Any input is appreciated. Thanks in Advance!

Welcome to the addiction.

If you called in two birds, then whatever you are using must sound OK. Box calls and pot calls (slate, glass, aluminum) are great calls and not too hard to learn. Mouth calls are harder to learn, but give you hands-free use so you don't run the risk of being busted by approaching birds.

I would advise checking Walmart, as I was just there this morning and the local one has most calls on clearance. You could try some and then whichever you like the best, you might spring for a more expensive custom call prior to next year.

As far as the decoys, they usually become less effective the later in the season. Many of the gobblers are past being super excited to breed, and unless a hen walks right up to them and forces them, they aren't going to take much effort to seek a hen out. Also, if you had a jake or gobbler decoy out, there's a good chance the birds you saw had no interest in possibly a fight at this point in the season.

Thanks, good idea on the calls. Decoys were hens only. Not sure if he saw me or didn't like the decoys.

Don't let these guys misinform you. Plenty of gobblers willing to take much effort to actively seek out unbred hens this late in the "hunting" season. "Breeding" season of the wild turkey is still very much in full swing, contrary to what most believe.

I would have loved to have had you with me Saturday and watched those birds stuff your words right down your throat :rotf: !

BTW, where is your offer of help to his questions :stir: ?

Lastly, did you finally fill your last tags  ?

I still had a Tom gobbling Sunday morning. He just didn't like something about my set up. He must have seen my face, that's turned many deer the other way.

Gobbling wasn't the problem, as they just were not interested in breeding that morning. Two stood strutting and gobbling at 70 yards for 45 minutes.

A hen came from behind me, then by me, and walked within 30 yards of them. She then proceeded to turn and come back by me. They watched her, but held their ground. Had one followed, he would have died.

My point was that he may not have done anything wrong, as is what I gathered from his post. Sure, there are gobblers that still get it on for another month or two, but by and large, at least in middle TN where I was that wasn't the case.

Welcome to the addiction.

As for the gobbling I had one burning the woods down Saturday afternoon and again Sunday afternoon but not as much. He didn't have hens and wouldn't work at all. Screwed around with him for 8+ hours over those two days trying to get him in range for my son. I ranged him at 56 yards but no closer.

Thanks guys. Maybe I didn't do anything wrong. I had a great time regardless. Needless to say, I am addicted.
