The morning began with me waking up late....the spot i had in mine was an hour drive south and I like to arrive at 5 am. I woke up 4:30 and 45 minutes late so I decided to go 20 minutes down the road to a spot I found some birds on Easter. I was skeptical at first because these bottoms were flooded with 20 inches of water 4 days before so it was a roll of the dice and I had a backup spot already in mind. I get to the spot and most of the water had drained out into the channels and only 8 inches remained. I was able to get back to where I found the birds a week prior only there were more birds gobbling than just the two I had heard a week earlier. I went as far as the state lands would allow which put me a roughly 500 yds from the roosted birds across a green unsprayed/tilled field. I went as far as i could without trespassing and yelped on my woodhaven red wasp....no answer....tried that 3 more times to no avail....I assumed the sound wasnt carrying far enough to get to the main gobbling bird....so I went to a trick I come up with and flipped the red wasp over in my mouth to obtain that higher pitch. the first time I did he cut me off...the second and third time he answered. I've gotten his attention." I said to myself and went back to my tree 50 yds off the state boundary. I hit him with a few more yelps as they flew down and he answered only to hush up not long afterwards. I sat there with my video camera changing the shutter speed getting the lighting right when I caught a top feeding toward me in the field then behind him a strutting longbeard looking for love in all the wrong places. I could tell he knew the hen was in the block of timber but not sure where so I gave him a slight yelp and he poked the head up and came straight into the woods walking parallel with my barrel not getting closer or further away. He strutted into the woods and i gave him a soft 3 note yelp and he began angling to me when another bird gobbled at my yelp. I waited for the chance to get the camera on him and move my barrel up and over a slight brush pile in front of me. When he walked behind a tree I made my move. A few steps later I rolled him over. I got great footage for a self film job on public land and Ill post the video after editing. The only bad thing is the tree that allowed me to move into position also block the kill shot on cam. Oh well it was my most memorable hunt and surprised myself that I called those birds over 400+ yds away. sorry so long
