I was wondering what the lightest load you all would reckemend for a 20g. For turkeys. Her is the deal I have a 8 year old boy and I dont wont to turn him agenest turky hunting. Thanks

Bigrob, my nephew (9 at the time) killed his first with my 12 shooting a remington express long range 6 shot, saying that I wouldn't trust a shot over 20 yards. Luckily his was only at 11 steps !!

They are now 11 and shot their first "turkey" load over the weekend, they took it quite well and never flinched. Before I would not let them shoot (practicing) a turkey load, I always stuck a heavy dove load because like you I didn't want them to get "gun shy". They both have killed 2 turkeys each and have never made one comment about the gun kicking after shooting their turkeys. I think like the rest of us, they get caught up in the moment and never realize the kick from the gun.

Good luck to you and your son and hopefully he will be your next lifelong turkey hunting partner !!

let him shoot light dove loads for practice then when he is hunting slip in a 20 gauge turkey load of choice and i promise he will never no the difference when shooting at game

Unless it knocks him on his backside.

+1. This is what my son did. He has now started shooting the turkey load on the range to double check his gun. Which last weekend took all of 1 shot. #7 Hevishot 3" 20 gauge shell from 40 yards - 120 pellets in 10" circle centered on the killzone of the turkey. He looked at me and said "I'm done" with a huge grin on his face! Little suckers 20 gauge will almost outperform my 12.
