.223 for deer in Tn?

Actually, when they did a controlled type study years ago on a military base, they found the opposite. There was a much higher percentage of loss with firearms that with bows.

It doesn't seem possible until you think about idiots that won't even walk over after shooting a firearm if they don't see the deer drop in its tracks or show some visible sign of a hit. I have a friend that was guilty of that, and ended up recovering two deer for him that he was sure he had missed.
Years ago game warden here told me more were lost with muzzleloader than with other weapons. Really didn't surprise me.

22 lr is legal in NC. Zero rifle restrictions.
No restrictions on barrel length or caliber for handguns in NC either. (deer or bear).

A little more off topic: NC allows only .22 rimfire pistol (as well as archery equipment) to be used for dispatching a deer during archery season. That would be a nice option for TN.

I am sure I am going to take heat for saying this, but not a chance I would use a .223/5.56 for deer. I have a ton of experience with this round and have seen way to many 110 pound malnourished Al-Qaeda and ISIS fighters take multiple rounds and keep coming. And I am not talking about the green tip rounds either. Just my opinion though, other users experience may be different.
Yes I know that Rakkin6 . But that ISIS would not movie with Varmint round and neck shot

Last deer I shot was with a .223 Remington and a 55 grain soft point. Big doe, she ran about 25 feet after the shot and fell over dead as a door nail. It's actually the same one I have for sale in the classifieds.

Deer aren't hyped up on methamphetamine either like those 110 pound insurgents were. The ones in fallujah in 04-05 were high as a kite. They were dead, they just didn't know it yet with all that adrenaline they had pumping.

A .223/5.56 with a 77TMK, 73ELDM, 75ELDM, 80ELDM or 88ELDM will absolutely wreck a deer's world. Stay off the shoulder if you want to save that shoulder meat. They have a neck length of 1-2" then about a 7" permanent wound cavity. Think 2 liter coke bottle size through the lungs. There's hundreds of field necropsy photos in that thread on Rokslide showing exactly how these bullets perform. 100% of people shoot light recoiling rifles better than rifles that beat them up. Just go to the range and watch people shooting their "deer" rifles. You'll see every form of target panic known to man on full display.

Oh I know all about Fallujah in 04-05. I was all through Anbar. Ramadi, Habbaniyah, Fallujah, TQ. What a $hit show that was man. Sounds like we were over there at the same time. Our team house was in Ramadi right on the other side of the river from Blue Diamond where 1 Mar Div and 2 Mar Div HQ was at. We ran up and down MSR Michigan and HWY 1 a ton.

Appreciate your service brother.

there's so much truth to this. But it's not manly to admit that. People think they need a magnum when in reality stepping way down would do them some good. I had a poor experience with a 223 and deer, but the rokslide thread has sparked a new interest. Might even get to add to that thread this fall.

In the gun shop today and a guy told me he was stepping up to a 300 win from the 7 rem mag. Said the 7 just can't knock them down, they always run, so he's stepping to the 300. He laughed at me using a 6.5 Grendel, 260 rem, 708, etc

Lots of people would benefit from less cartridge, more practice, and to study some deer anatomy.

If he shoots them in the same place with the 300 they'll run off as well . If he wants to knock them down he'd better get a 45-70 .

Poor shooting is poor shooting, doesn't matter what its with.

I've had them run on lung shots from a 300gr .458" at 1950fps just like with anything else. 45/70 doesn't knock them down any different than anything else I've ever used.

CNS shots drop

Lung/heart shots usually run
