MOA or Mil reticle?
FFP or SFP reticle?
What maximum power range?
Shooting for groups on paper out to 100yds or so and shooting steel at long ranges.

$400 and below.

Whatever it is be sure it tracks consistently and repeatedly.

I use a 36x for benchrest but I shoot against a lot of 50x scopes.

I have a 6-24 arken elp4 mil/mil that has been excellent but my favorite for long range is the swfa 12x mil/mil. That's the one we take out to 400. The swfa has a ton of travel and is dead solid on tracking. I think it's around 21-22mils of elevation from a 50yd zero to 400.

20 or 30 moa base/rings so you have plenty of travel.

Next depends on style of shooting you plan on.

For NRL/PRS - I really like FFP with MIL reticle and MIL adjustments. Christmas tree type reticle.

For mainly BR, i might go with MOA for finer adjustments. Fixed power high magnification seem to be clearer. Fine reticle. Listen to MUP and Remi for sure on BR.

My onion is that for a .22 the reticle won't matter as long as you have a fine cross hair in the center. I wouldn't want anything that has a dot, heavy lines or does not have cross hairs.

Max power range will depend on how much you want to spend. At 200 yards you are going to be in 30 to 50 inches of bullet drop depending on what you are shooting. So unless you are set at a specific yardage, your ability to calculate bullet drop will be most important.

I have Leupold, Nikon and Vortex scopes. They all will do a good job. So will the cheap Redhead scope I had on my .22. As long as I take the time to get a good sight picture. Nothing comes close to my Leupold's for the speed I can acquire a target. That probably won't matter if you are shooting paper.

I'm using a Vortex Venom 5x25x56 MOA, with the dot reticle for 50-100 yard BR, and so far I've been able to hang with the likes of a NF 55X optic that a couple of guys shoot with in our local matches. As my eyes age tho I can tell I would benefit from more magnification. MOA for just a tad finer adjustment for BR work would be my advice as well.
