I cannot believe how lucky I've been so far this year...

3 hunts in south MS since juvie season opened, and had a bird gobble back on every hunt. All my local hunting friends haven't heard a peep, and only 1 has killed a bird so far.

I thought I had a chance yesterday. Covered 1.5 miles in the area where the boss I'm hunting has been hanging out, called up 1 hen. I decided to hit the opposite side of the lease where there isn't much sign, and got a distant bird to answer back prob 300 yds away across a swamp at 1130. I cut the distance in half, called again, and he answered at the same spot. Closed in another 50 yards and he answered a 3rd time again in the same spot. I couldn't go any further for risk of bumping him, so I set up. Never heard another peep from him, I assume he has hens. I gave him till 1230, then had to bail for a meeting. I think I found his roosting tree however :)

Last year I only heard 1 bird gobble the entire season, and I killed him 3rd day of the season, so this season has already been a great success for me.

Glad things a going well for you in the Turkey woods so far, hope this turns into a great season for you and keep us informed. Really fires me up to read others hunting reports, keep them coming!

Good luck.

Interested in what you struck him with at 11:30?

almost literally the kitchen sink. Aggressive cutting with a mouth call and aluminum call acting like 2 hens in a knockdown dragout fight.

once I closed the distance, he responded initially to traditional lost yelps.... until he didn't anymore :(

Think he saw you?
always a possibility, but unlikely. I had already been calling non aggressively for 10 min at the initial spot when I struck him. I really think he just reflex gobbled to my aggressive calling despite having a harem of hens. I HAD to get to the opposite side of the swamp to have a chance, I don't think he would have crossed it where I was due to the density of the underbrush. Lots of big trees blown down from a tornado there a couple years ago. More open woods on the other side makes for good turkey habitat, but also a lot easier for him to pick me off getting set up.

Going to hunt some land right on the pearl river this Saturday morning with a friend. I hope Jon Papelbon didn't kill all the birds on it when he hunted yesterday. I've called up birds 3 out of 4 times I've hunted it in the past.

I'll try to locate this bird again Sat afternoon and tee him up for one of my kids the next morn I hope.
