3 inch turkey loads.

My gun has a 3 inch chamber so I shoot 3 inch win supreme high velocity #5 or 6 shot. Normally keep to 25 yards or less but I killed a couple at 35 and one on the move at 45 this fall so they do a great job killing birds.

A coworker was just telling me tonight about when he shot a 4 inch shell, said it knocked him on the ground lol.

Not sure if they were turkey loads he just said they were 4 inch loads.... dont know where you find those or a gun that will take them but I'm ok with the 3's for now! lol

I know guys that have Mossberg 835 guns and say they have killed birds at 55-60 yards. I shoot a Mossberg 500 with 3" and have killed at 45 yards. I like to get'em a lot closer than that.

I now hunt with a Mossberg 500 so the 3.5" isn't an issue for me. However, I've got the 3.5" chambered turkey barrel for my New England break action. Let me tell you what. I know how the gun kicks with just 3" shells, and there's no way on God's green Earth I'd think of hunting with the tall 3.5" shells. No sir! They were CRAZY to even suggest someone shoot those shells out of a light single shot shotgun!

3.5 inch 1 and 9/16 shot BB steal shot just wrecks em..... lol..3inch 2 ounce 5 shot, the winchester shells you get at walmart for 9 dollars a box.. 55-60 yards their died.

Here we go. As always, this is going to turn into who can take the longest most unethical shot with the cheapest ammo. Keep in mind there are young inexperienced hunters here trying to learn the right way to do things. I wish this forum had a rule like old gobbler where you cant even mention shots over 50 yards.
I bet that's a good rule, keeps people from bashing others for "unethical" shots. I know a gun or two that can kill a bird over 50 yards. A guy on here (killminister) killed at least two over 50 yards with his new setup (more expensive ammo though). If your gun can do 50+ yards then why should someone bash it? I know mine wont do 50 very well so i will not take that shot but did kill one at 45 this fall and it flopped on the ground and never took off again.

I know I am one of the young ones here that is learning but don't think someone taking a 60 yard shot with their gun will make me take a 60 yard shot with mine. I know my limits. I've killed a few birds and the only one I knew I hit that got away was shot with a bow at 20 yards. I am a bit shy of bow hunting turkeys now.

Their rule is 40 SH..... ;)

Thanks Griz. I couldn't remember if it was 40 or 50.
why is it 40? A lot of people kill consistently over 40. What's the reasoning behind the rule? I don't think I'd fit in very well at OG which is one of the reasons I have not registered there.

I understand setting the personal limit, makes sense. But can you say anything without talking down on people who don't fit your personal standards? I still don't get why some people think there is only one right way to hunt and preach it on people. I love killing a few hens in the fall but name one time I have told you that you should kill hens too. I may be a smart arse but I am usually open to learning and I think I'm a lot more open minded than people like you. I'm glad you have a strong sense of ethics but please stop pushing your ways on other people and tearing them down if they do something that doesn't follow your doctrine.

That's not the reason at all. It's to try to keep the chest beaters from leading inexperienced hunters from taking stupid shots. Plus, 40 yards was always the golden rule of turkey hunters until modern ammo and chokes, and most old turkey hunters still see it as the standard.
makes sense to me
