3 Questions--survey

1. Course layout and terrain. I hate going to shoots that put their targets in swampy/muddy/flood plane areas. Especially if it has rained recently. In the summer, I don't wanna have to wear my Mucks to a shoot when its 98 degrees with 95% humidity. I like a good mix of yardages as well...there's one local place that I probably wont go back to simply because the last two times I've shot there, I never moved my yardage needle more than 3 yards out of all 20 targets. Courses should be setup with all level of archers in mind...beginners, intermediate, and advanced. Somebody new that is coming to shoot Hunter class for the first time is not gonna enjoy shooting if all the targets are at the class's max of 40 yards. So mix it up a little bit. Also...we just wanna go shoot bows and not feel like we are trying out for an iron man competition. 20 targets don't have to be spread out over a mile long loop. LOL. But they don't have to be ASA range close either...where you walk a few feet over to the next target and have to wait on the groups ahead of and behind you to finish shooting so you can safely go pull and score arrows. And speaking of which...targets that are in good shape. I'm not a fan of shot out targets....when you can fit a tennis ball in the place the 12 ring use to be in...it's time for a new insert for it.

2. Friendly people running the shoot. You don't have to shake hands and kiss babies but it is good to show a little gratitude towards people coming out to the location to shoot. I've been to some where it seemed like they didn't care whether you were there or not.

3. For some people, the prizes are a big thing that determines whether they shoot or not. I personally don't care about this part. I go shoot just to shoot and seldom do I take anything for winning. I normally just ask if I can shoot for free at the next shoot if I win.

The day of the shoot. I prefer Sat. Shoots. Don't do many Sunday shoots.

Course. Love a nice course.

People that run the shoot, and the regs you see at the shoot.

Location, location, location. There are no shoots, that I know of, close enough that I will drive to them to shoot.

Location, time of day I can go(some places the shadows are too bad if you go early or late also I am not going to shoot if it is like a sauna or ,like Crow said,a marathon. That is really the only criteria I have as to where I go shoot. One small piece of the puzzle is also, if you can see a list of past shoots and the winners, are most winners local to the range. This will tell you a lot about the place......if most winners are local, why? Few shooters tells you that something is not right at this range, rude folks running it, maybe something isn't on the up and up. JMO

X2...wish more shoots were on Saturday. Sunday is a tough day with church and the family.

I agree 100%.

2. Location

3. Previous experience with staff & overall experience with how well organized it was.

Thanks for the replies guyskeep'em coming!

I will say this about the whole Saturday/Sunday thing. I cannot speak about other parts of the State, but in Mid-TN Saturday shoots are a bust compared to what Sundays are. At our club, if we have a Saturday shoot we will be lucky to have 50 shooters, unlike a Sunday shoot which will be near or over 100 for the day.

Really like this thread, it is always a help to know what people want and to try to make things better!!! Personally I like a challenging course, but not one where almost every target is stretched out to max or dodging tree limbs with either my head or cams!!

You can do a lot with shadows and such in woods to make courses challenging without stretching them out too far.

I can see that being the case. Even if the shoots were on Saturday my kids' sports would take precedent.

I enjoy shooting at a lot of places in the Mid-TN area! Of course I like some ranges better than others!

I prefer courses that have ASA type targets, because it just makes it easier to know the kill areas! I like ranges that maintain their targets in good condition and re-build them correctly with the kills in the proper place! A pass-thru is totally unacceptable at today's arrow prices!!!

I like the courses with a good mix of target sizes and at mixed distances that takes advantage of the terrain to challenge the shooter's ability! A raccoon at 45 yards and a groundhog at 50 yards is a little ridiculous! I like a good mix of distance on the targets, so give me a small deer at 20 yds and a mulie at 50 yds, but do I always have to have the smallest javelina at 47 yds!!

Too many turkey targets (other small targets too) tells me the club is low on money and doesn't like to carry targets! I enjoy shooting with clubs that are friendly and inviting in their demeanor and realize that me and any other shooter that shows up to pay their entry fee is the de facto CUSTOMER!! Some clubs fail to ever realize who their customer really is!

Shooting a 3D Course has a lot to offer an archer in one of the best ways to practice your craft and it also provides a wonderful social element to mix and mingle with like minded folks and it also is one of the best returns on your investment for entertainment value! Been to a movie lately? For the mere sum of $15.00 I can pound on thousands of dollars of targets (belonging to someone else) and throughly enjoy myself!

UTG: Perhaps if the children's sport were archery we'd see you more often

1 Location
2 the people working it have to be friendly
3 DON'T pick up the targets before I get a chance to pull my arrow.

That's why I like O.H. bunch of great people over there.

Still fairly new to this 3d shooting. I'm still shooting bowhunter novice. I pretty much go where my buddies do...lol.

I have noticed some of the stuff mentioned in previous posts. Folks running seem like they enjoy so it helps make it fun.

Shot 30 targets last Saturday and it seemed to run on a little bit but nothing horrible.

I think that's three.....
