Has any one used a 300 black out for deer?
I'm thinking bout getting my daughter (6) to start practicing with one to use for deer. ( AR platform due to adjustable stock ) #1 reason I'm thinking 300 bl is recoil. Any input?

Not much range, but if you put the bullet where it counts, you will have meat on the table.

It's good for children due to low recoil and muzzle blast. It's the same with any low recoil caliber you don't have much energy. You still have to put it where it counts. It's important with any caliber.

If you lose a deer with a rifle it's not due to caliber. It's shot placement.

It's best to start kids on a low recoil low blast weapon so the don't flinch, like all the burly men that shoot Magnum calibers.

Lost of the big magnum men would lose less deer if the shot a low recoil low blast weapon.

Deer are not hard to kill.

.300 blackout has a recoil energy of 7-9 foot pounds a .243 shooting a 100 grain bullet produces 9 foot pounds. This is just my personal opinion but I would take the .243. Much more flat shooting and will probably serve her for a much longer time until she is ready to move up a little. And you can buy a .243 in an AR platform. Here is a link I found through SOFREP for you at a good price. But you can also find them on Buds Gun Shop and Sportsman's Guide. But this is a pretty good deal. Best of luck brother.

Yes and a 243 puts both to shame, been a lot of deer killed with it but to be honest the 223 has some good bullets for deer and works well, practice for heart/lung shots with lungs a large target, 6year old wont be making 200y shots and probably a lot less than 100y if I had to guess. I bought a AR for my grandkids to learn to shoot high power, its a good thing having adjustable stock, Grandson has taken several and I have also, speed kills and lung shots jelly lungs and most have dropped less than 30y if not all of them, good luck to her and you could move up in 3-4 years to a bigger caliber but when something works there isn't much reason to change up unless its just a want to. A red dot or low mag scope works fine for short range, kids have trouble getting the distance on a scope to see through it good were as a red dot is more forgiving.

I've killed a few hogs with the 300bo, one of them was just over 300 lbs, and it didn't go 20, as they say.

I've killed a lot of hogs with one but yes there are better choices. Shot placement and bullet choice are critical. Pure copper like Barnes, hammer and maker bullets are good choices. Your better off going with 350 legend, 6 ARC, 6.5 grendel though.

If I get her on a 243 she will use my rem 700 in 243 I'm not looking to buy another AR in a caliber I already have. I can always put a youth stock on the 243

I prefer the 6.5G over the 300BO, but that personal preference. If you already have an AR lower on the correct configuration (adjustable stock) then you could just get an upper and some mags. This way you get an effective, low recoil gun in a kid-friendly configuration. Palmetto State is starting to sell some AAC ammo in 6.5G that is pretty affordable and uses hunting bullets that has good reviews.

I'd shy away from a .243 in an AR10 for a kid, as it will be too heavy and cumbersome for a young kid to handle.

I started my kids out with the 300 blackout. Loaded 125 NBTs at around 2250 fps. They killed over a dozen, all 1 shot. Bullet opened up perfectly, usually with a nice exit passthru. Even recovered one that son shot when he was 7 or 8 far back in the liver. Shots limited to no more than 100 yards, but generally a little kid doesn't need to be shooting more than 100 anyways.

IMO, a MUCH better round to start kids out hunting with than a .243. My .243 was crazy LOUD!. But we didn't have hearing protection back when I was a kid, just cotton balls in the ears.

I just thought you were looking for an adjustable stock for her that's why I sent you that link. But I don't blame you I would do the same exact thing if I already had the caliber.

Megalomaniac said basically what I was going to. My kids have killed a total of 9 deer with the 300 BO. It's not good for much range, but I would let mine shoot at anything far enough to matter. I started with the Barnes 110 gn, then switched to the 150 gn Gold Dot.

Dead on with what works with the 300BLK, And there are plenty more bullets that will work with it, and it makes a great sub platform if you go that route. When I first went that caliber, I had to make my own cases due to availability but now they are everywhere.

We have one and it never comes out of the safe. Don't like it at all. After about 75ish yards the bullet drops a lot. Never lost a deer with it but it takes a great shot. Way better options out there.
