Got access to some new ground. Went yesterday for the first time. Heard at least three, and they gobbled great. Got close to one, had him on the line (or so I thought) but he wiggled off as I had to leave for online Bible study. Birds were still gobbling as I left.
Back in there this morning and took a buddy who had only killed one. We split up. We both heard this one, as he was somewhat between us. I thought buddy was going after it, but he went after a different one.
I also worked my way to another one, but I ended up bumping him. Came back and went toward another one. After crossing a branch and brier thicket I got on a point at top of field. Determined that he was on other property, so went back toward the first one. I cutt/cackled and thought I heard one in that field. I was going through a pine grove, and when I got close to field edge, I ran another aggressive sequence. GOBBLE. He was maybe 100 yds or so, but I couldn't tell if in field edge or the pines.
I quickly sat up and waited. It was cold in the pines and my breath looked like a smoke stack, so I was worried about that.
After a few minutes I called again and he responded closer, in the pines. So I slid around the tree a little to cover more of my left side. Soon I caught movement at my 11:00. There was some thick stuff from my 10:00 to 11:00, so I wasn't sure which side. I put the gun right of the junk because I would need a quicker shot if he came that side. But through the junk I could see he was moving left, but further out than I thought he would. I got the gun on him, and he stepped out and froze looking at me. The 3" Win Longbeards did the job at a pretty long distance.
This is first year I've limited in a while as I'm usually trying to help my dad get one. We doubled opening day, and had a great hunt the next week, but then we both got the virus. Hes feeling up to going again, so the rest of the week will be spent trying to put another one in front of him.
