Went to a small tract I have permission to hunt this morning, heard 4 different birds gobbling, set up on one that was roosted 100 yards or so across the property line. I have him a couple soft yelps just to let him know I was there, he answered and I shut up, he flew down and headed my way but hung up in the field that I can't hunt and I never could convince him to come any closer. I look to my right and I see a turkey on the hillside a pretty good ways off, I assume it was one of the birds I heard gobbling on the limb earlier, more turkeys came over the rise and one started strutting, I gave them a few loud yelps, the two toms hammered and they all headed my way, there were 2 longbeards and 5 hens, the toms took off running toward me and the hens were right behind them. They get to about 200 yards and it was like they hit a wall, they started putting and took to the woods, I immediately thought coyote and sure enough one came out between me and the turkeys, he finally eased on off and I waited a little bit and gave them another series of yelps and they answered me in the woods, next thing I know they are back in the field running at me with the hens running behind them, they make it to about 75 yards and one blows up into strut and struts the whole way in and I busted him at 25 yards.
It's bittersweet to fill the last tag but I can still go and call for some buddies and start fishing more now.
