My 8 yr. old is little. His .410 with a 5 shot three inch shell puts 12 pellets in a paper targets head at 20 yds. twra legalized the .410 this year for the kids to use. I guess what i'm asking is, do yall think that it is enough gun to kill a mature bird at 20 yds.?

thanks

I think it will do the trick. My son is 7 and he is using a full choke 410 with Heavy Shot 3"#5's. We had a long beard @ 40 yrds from us on Saturday, but we needed him at 25a yards. I agree that the 410 takes more precision than the 20, but he is comfortable shooting the 410. That makes a difference for sure.

Get them close enough you can kill one with a cheap bb gun.
I know that is not legal but just saying, one pellet in the right place and they will go down.

Get them close enough and the 410 will be fine.

It goes without saying a 20 would be better, but if he shoots better with the 410 and enjoys it more, then so be it.

.410 will do fine if you get them close and are accurate. Ive got a Browning that will pattern plenty well enough to kill a turkey at 25 yards.

I'm like everyone else on here.. biggest baddest gun, choke and shells there is.. well a couple of years ago..dont really remember why.. but I ended up in the woods with my truck gun and a turkey call.. my truck gun is a jc higgins pump,I paid $50 cash for it and it only gets wd40 when it wont operate..lol.. well. I had 2 3/4 shells they may have been 6 shot but not sure.. anyway.. killed one of the biggest gobblers I have ever shot.. they are not really that hard to put down.. I'd say if its legal go for it...

I think the .410 would do the trick out to 20 yds. I also think giving him too much gun is a big mistake. My 10 yr old is just now big enough to handle the 20 ga.

It will work fine under 25 yards. Get some Heavi Shot if you can. Order it online and pattern the gun. I would go with Hevi Shot #6's.

Get him in a 20ga next year. My daughter was 10 when she started shooting her 20ga with 3" turkey loads. She never liked it, but she managed it. First time she pulled the trigger in the field, she missed a jake and the recoil rolled her for a back flip down a hill. We laughed for 20 minutes. She has killed two with it since and last Saturday killed a nice bird at 42 yards.

I would try and shoot 7's that way you have more pellets in your pattern, and they will get it done 30 yards and under.
