Our youngest (6) is wanting to hit the woods next Saturday for the Juvi Hunt. He got a .410 for Christmas and loves it. Handles it very well. These Remington loads are all we've ran through it. Will these work for Turkey loads at close range?

Re: .410 loads for Turkey

Not a .410 Hunter myself but all the guys (which is only 2) that I know tht are using them are running TSS through them. I would be wary about using those. No room for error. Just my opinion someone that shoots a .410 for turkey may have a different answer

Re: .410 loads for Turkey

Depends on what you call "close range"? I'm sure they would kill a turkey at 10 yards. Nobody turkey hunts with #8 lead. All the 410 shooters you are hearing about are shooting TSS. FAR superior to lead. I would also guess they are all shooting 3". Not 2 and a half. I'm sure someone will disagree because pawpaw killed a turkey with #8 lead in 1959, but imo it would not be ethical to hunt turkeys with those shells.

So I should pick up some TSS since both of you mentioned them. Should I let him try a pump 20ga I picked up?

Real close like 15 yards or so, maybe 20. You would have 205 pellets going down range, but I suspect they would start separating as soon as they left the barrel unless you had a screw in turkey choke. As others have stated, TSS #9.5 shot is your friend in .410 gauge. Check this link out to see if any in stock. Two day shipping for .410 shells few weeks back. Lower right, red hulls.

If the .410 fits him well and he's already used to it, you could pick up some TSS and pattern shoot it, but it should be good. The .410 guys can steer you in the right direction there. If the 20 gauge fits him well it would be a good option as well. TSS for the 20 might be easier to find.

This is a .410 pattern at 40 yards using Apex TSS

TSS hard to find in .410?

I know the nitro ammo is a little expensive but some.fuys swear by it. I am a Longbeard XR guy myself

Re: .410 loads for Turkey

For TSS pellet size, anything larger than #9 pellet (so #7s, #8s, etc) is a waste of space in the hull, especially in .410, thus reducing pattern density/coverage. In other words, I personally would never buy a #7 or #8 pellet shell to turkey hunt with. For .410. I recommend 9.5s as I mentioned above. For 20G, I shoot straight #9s. Good luck!

Here is my sons pattern with factory full using Hevi X turkey 410 with #6 shot at 20 yards.

As you can see that's a dead bird but the density is not there. I picked up a box of HEVI X-18 TSS #9 in 410 to try.

As mentioned before I would certainly not use those loads and definitely suggest spending the money on TSS #9 or you might hear Bye bye turkey... [emoji22]

Re: .410 loads for Turkey

You can kill a turkey with a .410 using lead, but I would not use #8s. And your range is definitely going to be limited. You could pattern some 3" 7s. If the pattern density is adequate, the pellets will do the job out to 30. But the pattern mat limit you to 25 yards or so.

With the right TSS load a .410 can be a 40 yard gun. But you have to pattern it to know regardless of the shell.
