I have a Ruger carbine in .44 mag, inside 100 yards it does the job just as well as any rifle you could buy. I hunt a lot of thick bottom land and that rifle loaded with 240 grain Hornady JHP's drops them dead.
I can tell you from experience it will make a deer's eyes go cross. I have killed with it and I have a good friend and that is all he hunts with, he is recoil shy and in a rifle the recoil is minimal. It makes a great first gun for a child.
I killed one last year with my Marlin 44. It did a good job but the deer probably ran 60 yards straight up the hill. I was shooting some type of platinum tip pistol ammo. This year I reloaded some Hornady ammo to try. If that doesn't work I will use Winchester white box. Everybody gives them good reviews.
Cast bullets work great with larger calibers. I killed many deer with my 45/70, several with loads using cast bulles that simulated .44 mag ballistics.
