I've come so close over the last 5 years but never could seal the deal on a Tom. I've called in some of those wary public land birds just not close enough. I've called in Jakes but didn't want to kill one for my first bird.

This morning it all fell into place for me. The wife gave me permission to hunt this morning (just had our 2nd child a few weeks ago). I didn't think I would get the chance to go at all this year.

I pull into our place and hear gobbles in every direction. One was fairly close and sounded like he was roosted right by my ladder stand which is right by the road not 200 yards away from the truck. I creep over there and sit down where my ladder is just out of sight. He's gobbling, I hear some hens so I just mimic their yelps. Then he flies down into the plot in front of my stand. Then a hen flies down right past me. I knew he was soon to follow so I stopped calling. He steps out, struts for a second, comes to about 30 yds and I drop him.

I got home so early my wife had to ask if I ever left! [emoji2]

Here he is with my oldest.

Congrats man. Way to not hang it up after those frustrating years!

And congrats on the new baby!
