He & I heard 6 different birds Friday morning from 4 different locations so that left me torn on where to start this morning. One of locations was a spot that I took his older brother to 15 yrs ago on juvi hunt, so that's where we decided to go.
Wind was howling this morning and we got in tighter than normal. Hooted at 6:15 and one cut me off about 200 yds away. Wind still hard & fairly dark so we cut another 75 yds off distance. By time we got setup 4-5 birds were sounding off.
A few soft yelps & it was on. He looked at me & whispered "Papa, we are surrounded"! A Jake came in on our right & stayed a couple minutes about 10 yrds before easing down into hollow. Once he got gone, I called again and one hammered down to our hard left, close enough to hear him drumming. Knew it was going to be tough to get him twisted around into position when bird came into view at 40 yds. He must have seen us move as he started easing off. Couple minutes after he disappeared, another gobbled backed to our right, again close enough to hear him drumming.
There was a little rise between us so I was able to get Kaden shifted back to the right when I saw his head at about 30 yds. He came to about 20 yds, turned around like he was leaving & then stopped. Bang, flop! 6:50 AM we'd called in 3 gobblers & killed 1!
Kaden jumped up & said that we he got that close, his heart was about to explode.
While walking back to our old hunting Jeep, he said that " all those video games really paid off". Now I stay on him about them all the time, so I asked him how? He replied, " I'm real good at snipering, so I know just where to aim". Might just be something to it as when I cleaned it there was only 1 pellet in very top of breast.
He also used an old H&R 20ga that I bought his mother 35 yrs ago.

Congrats to you and Kaden both. Could he hear the drumming?

Neither one if you will ever forget it.

I'm a "Papa" also to a 1 yr old granddaughter and a grandson due Sept 2. I sure hope I get to replicate your experience with Kaden in a few years.
