After over 2,000 pics observation.

Last weekends first pull of the year,6 cameras. Zero pics of any newborns.I guess mama has hidden somewhere.Less than 100 night pics.I figured for many many more.Not so.

All pics were over Trophy Rocks.I have tried every salt block and trace mineral and even pool salt.Trophy Rock simply draws more and holds them longer than anything else.

Maybe the bucks should be worthy enough to show in 3-4 weeks.

In the last 8 years I have recorded over 20000 photos of deer on salt................all over trace mineral or plain. We have over 3030 acres and numerous licks and they get pounded. :whistle:

Trace mineral is all I use. Never had much luck with Trophy Rocks and I've tried them on different farms several times.. I'm getting 2000+ pics every 4 weeks right now on trace. Hole dug out the size of a truck bed. I started with 10 lbs of ice cream salt and 25 lbs trace in it in March. Then I usually carry bout 12 lbs trace with me everytime I check camera to freshen it up...

I bought some stuff at Tractor Supply called "Lucky Buck" that they seem to like. I mix it with the salt.

I generally don't get a lot of fawn pictures at salt licks until late in August. And even then, they are seriously under-represented. I don't think fawns need the same level of salt as adult deer do.

At nearly every location where I've run both a late summer salt-baited census AND a fall season non-baited census, the fawn recruitment numbers calculated from the salt-bait pictures are far below what I get from cameras over food plots in fall.

Trophy rock over rated? Not at all. Over priced? Absolutely, but they have been marketed properly and generally work fairly well so people will continue to buy them.

I do deer surveys on lots of properties. I generall put several salt licks in for these surveys. I use the red mineral salt granules and mix it with grape kool aid powder. Deer love this. I have literally gotten pictures within 15 minutes of leaving the sites.

I mix trace mineral and regular salt with a little deer cane...get about the same number of pics than when I used the high dollar trophy rock and about a fifth the cost per pound.
