Do you hunt turkeys differently in the afternoon and do you stay out until dark?

Thanks for the help.

It is kinda different in the afternoons. You pretty much try and find where the toms go to strut after they leave then hens. Or go to a place where you have seen quite a few hens hangout and set up and try to call one in. And another option is to go pretty close to where you know they are going to roost and set up. I find it much easier to call birds in during the afternoon only because they are normally alone.

I hunt mainly in the afternoon because of my job. I have killed a few birds in the afternoon and they wasn't with any hens. I carry one slate call and use it about every 15 minutes. After he shows up then I lay my call down and scratch in the leaves.

I do not hunt past 4, not because they can't be killed late, but only because I want to let the birds have some time when they can settle down, and go to roost without being bothered. Nothing wrong with hunting them late, and I am sure it can be really great. I just choose to let the birds I hunt have a breather late in the day. However, I am also fortunate to get plenty of time in the woods, so I can pick and choose the times of day I hunt.

Me and TheOne bagged one this evening after 7,afternoon hunting can be some of the best, but be prepared for a long set, these gobblers never made a noise.

We had an old bird on our property about 4-5 years ago & nobody could do anything with him. He'd gobble at every sound in the woods but he would not come to a call. He roosted in about the same place every night. There was a little meadow just above where he roosted. I suspected he might be feeding in the meadow before he went to roost. I set up beside the meadow around 4:00pm, it was real windy. I made a series of calls, waited 30 min., called again. I called every 30 mins. or so & at about 6:30pm I thought I heard a faint gobble but I wasn't sure because of the wind. Around 7:30pm I heard him walking up the ridge. He walked up & just peeked his head over the edge of the meadow, looked around a bit, then walked into the meadow. He gobbled while I was watching him from 20 yards away. I shot him & felt as if I had done what I needed to do to kill that particular bird. I prefer the run & gun method of hunting, but sometimes if ya can't find one that will play, ya gotta change it up.
