My mentor is a bit of a horn chaser, one of those I won't shoot anything under 130 and 3.5 years old. Well I have yet to kill my first deer. I showed him these pics of this buck, the only one I got pics of and he went all negative nancy on me. Especially when I told him he isn't the boss and if I see it I'm cutting it because it would make me happy for my first deer. He told me to shoot does. He also said that this deer isn't even 2.5 yet and I felt like it was at least 2.5 but I'm not sure so I ask for help.





 
It would be a fine first deer, don't let your friend talk you out of shooting him if you get the chance. My first deer was a 1.5 yr old baby 5 pt and I don't regret it at all.
 
I didn't read your post just the title asking for age help.... Brother if you've never killed a buck I'd blast him the first chance I got! Don't let him bother you! It's easy for him to say that when's he's killed plenty of deer but if I was you I'd be letting some lead fly! It's all about what makes it fun for YOU not someone else!
 
If I had never killed a deer, I would shoot the first one that presented itself as long it is legal. If you aren't on a club with antler or age restrictions blast away.
 
I wouldn't consider him a mentor if he was talking down on you for shooting your first buck. As long as I wasn't on a club with restrictions I would shoot him and care less what anyone thought about it.
 
Do what makes u happy. In my opinion that would be a big deer for a first buck. Most first bucks are spikes and 4pts around here
