A feller on this site last year, Setterman, recommended an aluminum call.... He had a few different reasons for his recommendation..... What is a decent aluminum call?

I see that there a a thousand different brands.....
I know a true custom call would be highly recommemned, but I dont want to break the bank.....

What about A "Zink Thunder Ridge"?

zink aint bad nor are some of the Knight and Hale if you are looking for PRICE being the objective. Woodhaven makes a great one as does Ridgemont.

Why would you recommend an aluminum call? Would you?

Aluminum calls are actually very good calls (i dont like the shiny ones).

they tend to do very well wet or dry in addition they have great friction and tone to them. It all comes down to what you like but it is the same argument as glass vs slate...why do you like one over the other. Aluminum calls just can have a different pitch and some really like it. Slate is my fav personally but aluminum has its place without a doubt and is actually growing in popularity. Aluminum by nature has more of a friction surface to it then most other call materials minus slate, however aluminum is/can be MUCH louder then slate with the same amount of raspyness. it does not require as much sanding as none coated glass calls as well. again to each his own but aluminum calls are great calls to carry if you dont already have enough in your bag.

Appreciated....

when they first came out they were said to be VERY HIGH PITCH and great windy day calls or if nothing else was working...calls have come along way since then and a bunch of new materials were introduced such as the Ol Yeller and what not. Since then people have come to refine aluminum calls more like adding in the green iodized version (which i prefer) but they are for the most part LOUD and will reach out there still yet can be toned down for soft up close action.

again its what you like and are confident in but aluminum is not a fly by night "new" type of call and is actually very popular in the pro hunting world. If you can afford one get one and check it out or if you know someone that has one try and use it some. Just be sure to use it OUTSIDE as a big mistake people make is testing calls out inside or around alot of ambient noise only to figure out it sounds much difference in the silence of the woods.

Google Light's Out Yellowheart Anodized Aluminum and Woodhaven's Vison Aluminum.

I think they both are award wining working calls.

I've bought a Light's out glass and recently bought a slate. I am trying to hold off to maybe next year to get an aluminum from Wendell lol.
