Have they ever tagged the bass at a tournament to see how many are caught again and again at different tournaments on the same lake?

Over the years there has been some pretty significant research done on tournament releases. They have even radio tagged fish to see if they return to the location from which they were caught. My memory is that some did return a significant distance, while others stayed close to the release site. That is one of the reasons that fishing around marinas and launch ramps where tournaments weigh in can be good because of "extra" fish that stick around.
here is a similated study they did in alabama. quick overview, spring bass disperse from the release site within a few months. fall bass stay within a mile from the release site. black bass biomass densities could increase from 50-100% if an estimated 6000 or so fish are released in a given year.
