Hey folks, i was wondering if you all could give me some info on the Johnson City area. I am thinking about coming out there right after easter. Any info would be appreciated.

They were vocal this morning, even before the storm, in greeneville. Still bunched up though.

I'm in that area. It's still slow here, some gobbling on the roost but after flydown they stay quiet and just stay with the hens and strut all day. My cousin just killed a big one around 10am after hearing a bunch gobbling to thunder but I was out and could see a group of birds with a gobbler several jakes and hens yesterday and it started thundering and they did nothing but strut. Should get better once the hens start nesting. Hopefully that won't be much longer.

Thats good to know. Is there some good public hunting out that way?

If there is I havent found it yet. I bought a map from the Forestry service and have at least been able to find a place or two to get access to some ground this year. But those places have been swarming with hunters.

I kinda regret even buying license. Most everything around here is private. Even the green on the maps that suppose to be public is fronted by A LOT of private to where you cant get to it anyway. VERY frustrating.

I understand the frustration millerbuc. There's plenty of land shown to hunt but hard to find parking.

thousands of acres in Cherokee national forest.

Yeah, until you get boots on the ground and see how inaccessible a lot of it is. And from what I have seen and heard, most of the game(Deer, Turkey, etc) is down at the foot of the mountains on the private farms.

I have no experience in north Cherokee but that's certainly not the case in south Cherokee.

In the Johnson City area, this IS the case. Especially when the few access roads we have into the mountains are kept closed as they have been the last couple of years. Be prepared to hike a ways.

Washington Co and Greene Co is full of birds. Knock on some doors, you will be surprised who will let you turkey hunt even if they dont allow deer hunting.

Been on gobbling birds everyday I have been north cherokee. As long as exercise dont hurt you there are lots of birds there. Just got to walk aways to get to them. If you head to johnson city hunt buffalo mountain. If you put the miles in you will get on one.

I agree with stik. South cherokee has tons of easy access. Now the terrain is pretty tough when you leave the vehicle, but it is easily accessed.

I may have to hit up south Cherokee sometime. I am in Johnson city for grad school. Driving a civic would make for a time on buffalo haha. I've been lucky enough to hunt in greeneville this year however.
