I'm headed up there the end of next week. Never been. I will be wading and fly fishing. Any suggestions on access points, flypatterns, guides, whatever, would be appreciated.

You may want to call Region IV about the access issues. It is my understanding that there continues to be some very contentious altercations between landowners and fishermen concerning the right to wade on property the landowner claims (bottom of the river).I have a good friend that stopped fishing up there due to all the BS going on.

I would guess that you might see some sulphurs as well as caddis hatching.

The TWRA position is that if we access at a public access site and stay in the water, we can walk all the way to the Gulf of Mexico without trespassing, as long as we stay off the shore. Correct?

I'm not sure that is correct for that situation. That is why I recommend you talk to someone up in Region 4 that had been dealing with the trespass issues on the South Holston.

Further, outside of waters on the Army Corps historical list of navigatable waterways, I would question whether your statement is correct in all cases.

Good point, Steve. I had made the assumption that the SoHo is considered a "Navigatable Stream". My statement was a tongue-in-cheek statement that would basically be true for any stream that's indisputably a navigable stream. Thinking about it, even though the SoHo is very boat able in some conditions, in other places and low water it might not be.

Please, anyone reading this, don't make any decisions based on my comment. I'm just a fisher.

The issue is further complicated by the fact that some streams that can be navigated are not on the Corps historical list of navigatable waters. It is my understanding that if they are not on that historical list that courts very possibly would not consider them navigatable.

The bottom line is that riparian law is very complex and ever evolving. There are recent rulings from upper courts in VA that are concerning to me as a fisherman. There are definately more questions than answers in this arena.

Give these guys a call. http://southholstonriverflyshop.com/
They are located less than a 1/4 mile from the river and from what I hear, know their stuff. Lots of areas to fish down the river you just need to avoid the wrong ones. One landowner even has a "security" team to watch the river. My son had a nice video of an exchange on his old phone between the one he calls "The owner of the River" Hope this helps you out.
