past few days iv went the birds have been going nuts. As soon as i here one i work a little way towards it and sit and begin to call. sounds like hes comming in on a string. then all the sudden he shuts up and never gobbles agin? i dont think a hen has had any thing to do with him leaving havent heard them with them but could be. Its so fustrating when you have 3 birds sounding like they are comming to u and all of them shut up and leave.

Be patient grasshoppa!

Try to get in as close as you can and that's all you can do. The most important thing to do is be patient.

If he hangs and you are sure hes hung up get up and move away and try calling again. That may work he will think his chance is walking away from him.

How long have you waited them out. I have sat for over an hour sometimes after they have quit gobbling and then they finally come in. When they shut up you can bet on one of two things. They are comin right at ya or goin dead away from ya.

Might have snuck in, made you, and then walked away undetected. Happens all the time.

I played this game for 3 hours Sunday morn. I finally put all my calls up and played the quiet game for hour..........and he then played the goin dead away from ya.

Sometimes the only thing that will make a difference is a new day.

Hens, plain and simple. Especially if you are having this experience right around fly down.

Here is what is happening IMO, bird is blistering it on the limb, then on the ground right when he lands. You call, he is eager to join his hens, and starts to head towards you. In the meantime, the hens join him along the way, he struts away with them. Hence the shutting up and disappearing.

COuple of ways to beat it, set-up close, I mean push the envelope close to him on the roost. Call sparingly, we all love to hear them gobble, but that just adds to the problem of him drawing his hens to him. Be close, and that will allow him to come find you first before his hens intercept him.

This is pretty common right now when things start greening up, many times the hens will quiet now, and with a little foliage he can't see them like he could a week ago. Or they are roosting separate, but it is a little early for that yet.

Remember, don't overcall!!! Making him hammer a million times on the limb or on the ground will only hurt you in this phase.
