Was looking for some shells at Academy and they only had the VERY expensive Winchester Xtended Range in #4. Anybody use this size shot? I haven't seen anybody mention #4's in the "Which load" thread.

Having seen #7 Heavyweight pellets completely penetrate a turkey's breast (completely shoot thru a turkey) at over 40 yards, I just can't see anything but disadvantage to using HTL pellets any larger than #6, nor lead any larger than #5.

The disadvantage of #4's is you have fewer pellets, less dense patterns, say as compared to #5's. A single #5 pellet is quite capable of breaking a turkey's leg or wing, so why opt for something with a less dense pattern?

And if you only go for head shots, it may be that anything larger than #6's (lead or HTL) is a disadvantage.

Lead #5s are great, will break wing at 35-40 yards. Not sure if I'd want to use #4s but I'm sure they would work ok

the lowest id go is #5 but that's just me. I agree I wish it was just # 6 and 7. but 5,6 and 7 in mag blends are just crazy good imo they pattern like crazy.
