If so, do you use the factory chokes or aftermarket? If aftermarket, what brands are available? Most stuff I see is usually for the 835, but honestly I love my 500 and see no reason it cant work great as a turkey gun.

I have a buddy who uses one with factory choke and has no problem throwing a good pattern at 45 yards. Not sure what shell he shoots

I did for the first 20+ yrs of my turkey hunting life.

Most of my birds were taken with a M/B XXFull choke and 3" Winchester Supreme #5s. Killed more than one at more than 50 steps (got excited :D ).

It did not like the magnum turkey loads.

My father-in-law uses one in 20 gauge.
He bought an undertaker choke for it at wal-mart.
He did splurge and buy some kind of Winchester shells that were pretty high.

At about 30 yards it throws an UNBELIEVEABLE pattern.
Just as good as my 3 1/2" Browning Silver with a Jelly Head or compnchoke.

all the aftermarket chokes make one for the 500,polish the barrel and get a good choke[pure gold, primos, indian creek etc.] and it will pattern with any gun on the market.

My first turkey gun was a 500 and killed several birds with it using the factory xtra full choke and 3" Winchester Supreme #5's. It had a 28" barrel and I wanted something shorter so I sold it and bought the 835 with 24" barrel. I still use the factory choke and same shells except 3 1/2". My son has a 500 Bantam 20 gauge and killed his first bird with it last year at 30 yards. He could kill one at 40 the way it shoots but I want 30 or in for him.

I have a 500, and absolutely love it! I am using factory XX full choke and shooting Winchester Supreme #4's. I topped it with a bushnell red dot scope with high rise mount so I can still use tru-glo sights if needed. It is a killing machine! Very light to carry and thumps their noggin!

yeah...mine is still just the factory field gun...28" barrel but has the full choke if I want to install it. Is the undertaker a tighter pattern than the factory full?
What is the advantage to a shorter barrel on a turkey gun?

the undertaker will be tighter than your factory full depending on what constriction you get i really dont know of an advantage to a shorter barrel besides easier to move around and alot lighter. Where are you from?

My ex-wife is stepping up and wants to buy my son his first gun. I'm handy and can fix most anything firearm related but rather than a fixer upper or used I wanted something new that she could afford. My son is 13 5'-8" and has huge hands. He's a big boy and could probably handle a 12 ga. just fine but he wants a 16 or a 20. We went to Academy tonight and he tried on the Mossberg Bantam & Youth model 500. I also looked at a Yildiz but hadn't heard anything about them. Any body have any experience with one?
