I am interested in hunting with a bow (something I've never done before). I stopped in a local archery shop today and talked to some real nice and knowledgable folks. The fella there measured me and told me that I have a 32" draw length. He said he didn't have anything in stock that'd fit me, but suggested I call PSE because he thinks they offer a bow that'll go that high. I did and PSE told me that the new Vendetta XL model (over $650!!!) can be adjusted up to 32". Being new to archery, I don't want to sink that much money into a bow until I decide it's for me.

One guy at the range there let me shoot his fancy competition bow with a 30" draw. It felt okay to me, but I don't have any experience to know what feels "right". The salesman told me I might be able to make due with a 31" draw bow.

Anybody have any suggestions or thoughts on this? Know where I can find a good 32" bow for less? Or think I should try to deal with a 31"?

Thanks in advance.

Stretch your arms out to the side and have someone measure from finger tip to finger tip. divide that by 2.5. that will be real close to your draw length. If you have a 32 inch draw you have some dang long arms.

Well, I trust the guy at the archery shop, and he's the one who measured it at 32". He looked pretty surprised, too. I'm 6'5, and am accustomed to being able to pick stuff up from across the room. :)

Pick your release first. some releases stick out from your hand some. with the right release, you may be able to shoot a 30" or 31" draw without having to special order.

I appreciate all the advice guys. I went ahead and ordered the Martin Threshold package. I know that it's "thrifty", but it goes up to 31" and will be enough for me to decide if the archery thing is right for me. I can order a "better" bow down the road if I stick with it. I did also find a good adjustable release to help me sneak another .5" or so in.

I tried this. Fingertip to fingertip was 79". Divided by 2.5, it's 31.6. Hopefully the adjustable release and a 31" bow will work out for me.

Put a knocking loop on a 31 inch and you will be where you want to be Draw length wise.

32" draw. You could almost reach out and spear them with your arrow. Always better to have a bow with the draw length with a little shorter than you need than a little longer. Good luck, you'll be hooked soon.

Again, I appreciate the input guys. As far as the comment about crossbows - I'm looking into it. I do some huntin' down in Mississippi, so that's why I'm leaning more towards a regular bow. Sure wish MS would get on board and allow crossbows for everyone!

Trust me man, you'll be hooked very quickly. Being drawn back on any deer at 20 yards is one of the best adrenaline rushes out there! Enjoy it man.

Once you are set up practice, practice, practice

String loops add a 1/4 inch or so. Be sure and have one added to your string. Oh and the other thing, HAVE FUN! Archery is a great sport and very addictive!

I'd say he has a 32" draw. I'm 6' 3" with a 31.5" draw. But I can shoot 30-32".

If you are 6'5" then 32" is about right. I would think if anything it would be a little longer. I have a 32" draw and I am only 6'3". So find a bow that fits. Don't settle for a bow too short. There are bows with a 32" draw. Get one of those. Starting with the Martin set is smart. Decide how much you like this before you get into it with more money.
Forget the crossbow. Stick with the bow you have and you will have a good time. Stick with your archery pro also it sounds like he knows what he's doing.
