I have fletched alot of arrows.... I have two jigs that I use regularly, A Greyling & Bohning.... I am fairly good at it except for the mess... No matter how hard I try, I either get the ugly mashed out glue from the base of the vane or not enough glue and one end remains loose....

I have tried a couple different applicators, and still no luck...

I have seen some folks who can fletch an arrow that looks like it came off of a machine... No glue and a perfectly bonded vane..

Whats the secret? I have done hundreds of these things.. I have yet to find the secret....

I don't really know what to tell you. I try and run a bead of glue down the vane that is about half the width of the vane. When I put the vane on the arrow, if any glue squeezes out, I will take a wet paper towel and wipe it off. They look fine doing it that way. One thing though is if you use a wrap with a graphic on it, you can't really wipe the glue because it will smear the graphic, or sometimes anyway. The same thing can happen if you have a white wrap and a paper towel with a color print on it. The color from the towel can run off on the wrap.

I really can't offer any specific advice except for practice makes perfectit took me awhile to be able to get it looking good. However, try to get the applicator hole as small as you can and make sure you clean the base of the fletching and the arrow itself for maximum adhesion with as little glue as possible.

Take a look at this fletching solution. I am going to try these this year as soon as they come out with a lighted version (which they are working on now). It is called NuFletch and they are based out of Florida. Their website is:

Let me know what you think.

No kidding on the OUCH!!! That will buy a lot of regular fletches, not to mention all of the added weight to the back of the arrow--especially when they come out with a lighted system--I would bet they would total out to be around 30 grains. For target shooting--maybe, but I personally would not use those for hunting because I want as much weight in the front of the arrow for FOC and k/e purposes.

Two things to try

First, keep the tip clean and the glue at the nozzle end of the tube (meaning as the tube starts to empty, roll the end up to keep the glue in one area) that helps you keep steady pressure on the tube when applying the glue.

Secondly, run a thin/steady bead of glue down the center of the fletch instead of trying to cover the entire surface. The glue will spread out evenly and not squeeze out the sides.

It is a simple process of having a steady hand and applying just the right amount to the fletch.

It took me many many arrows before I got my arrows where I thought they looked pretty good. I think my biggest helping tactic was to use as small of an applicator hole as I could.
Sometimes on my bitz, some vanes tend to squeeze some glue out fo one side rather than both, on them naturally when I apply the glue I apply to the opposite side the glue is being mashed out. When the vane mashes down, if evenly distributes the glue.

A little tip I can give you is after putting nice "thin" bead of glue take you a pieace of wax paper, and dab the fletching on it to remove excess glue, It will kinda mash the glue to the edge of the vane, and take off the excess at the same time, and will help leave a nice clean edge on your fletching glue, and vane !

Also if your using any of the fast set glue, like Goat Tuff, I see many peopl try and use way to much glue ! It only takes a little !
Try putting just 3 dots of glue, One at the front of the vane, one in the middle, and one at the back, and spread your glue thru the valley of the vane with the tip of your glue bottle, then dap on wax paper to remove any excess !

Try this, It should help !

I have never tried the wax paper. I do run my bead and then slide my thumb along the edge of the van so my thumb wipes the excess. This works pretty well for me. But it will take some practice. But after 3-4 vanes you will get the hang of it. I will try the wax paper thing, though.
