For those of you who don't like 'science' :)

I'm curious just what "science" was used (and where) to collect the data on the dates of nest initiation?

Nest initiation data is pretty easy to nail down to within a couple of days based on either embryologic development in the egg or observational data of poults.

What I find surprising is that TWRA admits average nest initiation is at the end of the season, yet the biologists continue to set season opening 5 to 6 weeks prior to average nest initiation.

That's no problem if there are multiple gobblers to service hens after season ends.. but in areas with marginal populations, it is more than possible, even likely, that all males will be removed prior to breeding. IMO, the single biggest factor causing our decline in Turkey numbers.

You know a lot more about turkeys than I do. Hasn't the season been starting around the same time for the past 10-15 years at least?

That being said I wish The commission would at least try to make some changes to help the population. Change dates, bag limits, decoys, something!

I'm sort of leaning this way, but not totally. It is definitely the most controllable aspect anyone can do, is to limit the early harvest mortality of gobblers.
I still think weather and habitat has more to do with anything.

But controlling the opening of season can be changed.

Yes it has been the same opener for a long time. But easy long range shotguns and also easy decoys and blinds make opening day harvest numbers way too high.

Plus ever increasing number of hunters

I know a certain "know it all" on Facebook that has argued with me on this subject. It amazes me really that people refuse to accept the slightest bit of information...then again our own state doesn't pay much attention to their own research. [emoji849]
