After hunting with my son Cory yesterday and watching him kill a nice longbeard I took 16 year old Nick seeking his first longbeard. Last year he killed a Jake and a bearded hen. We set up well before daylight in the spot I hunted last year opening day and put out the decoy spread as seen below. We settled in back in the edge of the woods and waited. We heard maybe 35 gobbles on the roost and watched across the field as the birds pitched down in those woods. We heard a loudmouthed hen and tried to call her in for quite a while but she juse milled around yelping. Finally we saw and watched 4 hens about 100 yards across the field feed for probably 20-30 minutes before feeding out of sight. Then about 15 minutes later they returned with their boyfriends...at least 4 longbeards and a jake or two. They all stayed acoss the field where the hens had fed while two of the longbeards strutted. After a few minutes, the back longbeard broke from the flock and headed our way. He got a little headstart when the three other longbeards turned our way also. We coordinated our shots and at about 35 yards when they stopped we let them have it...Nick shooting the lead bird first then me firing. It's an awesome feeling to take a longbeard on that kind of hunt, but even better to get to share it by doubling with an up-and-coming turkey hunter! Enjoy the pics!
