I saw 3 groups on the farm this afternoon. 2 groups had chickens about the size of a full grown chicken. The 3rd group had chicks the size of 2-3 week old chickens. They couldn't fly just ran off with the hen. When do you think she got bred? Seems late to me

I have been seeing a few broods on my side of river the last couple weeks. Had me worried because I didn't see any in may or june.

Same here and our numbers have been way down the last 2 or 3 years

Hard to say, also I'm no biologist. But the first group you say is probably hatched last week of May through first to second week of June. Which seems to be about normal.

Second group, if they truly couldn't fly (lots of times they run instead of fly anyways) they are less than 12-14 days old. If they are 14 days old, then they hatched around July 2 or so. Minus 28 more days hen started setting on her clutch of eggs on about June 4. Takes about 14-20 days to lay a clutch (depends on size of clutch made) so she started nesting around May 13-20 probably. No telling when she was bred, since I believe they can still fertilize eggs twenty or so days after breeding. In this case, I bet she lost her clutch that was started in late March to early April, lost another clutch mid to late April, and this could have been her third clutch to develop. I would seem to think she would have been fertilized in late April early May.
