A good friend of mine killed an 8 point Wednesday afternoon.
The buck was a 2.5 year old deer and was one of 5 bucks in a bachelor group. There were no other deer in the field but these bucks, they came out together and were feeding together. And to make it even more weird, the buck was in FULL velvet!

Thoughts anyone???

BSK ????

Bucks that either have problems producing specific hormones or their body doesn't react normally to those hormones can stay in velvet year round.

Just because the buck has testicles doesn't mean they are functioning correctly. In addition his body may not be able to recognize/utilize hormones produced.

My friend in Decatur Co. killed what he thought was a big doe, only to find that it was a buck that had dropped his antlers and the sores on top of his head were already healed. He may have been antlerless for a couple of weeks.

BSK I've heard you talk about "stress" on the deer herd having strange effects on the deer.
Could this be something that was brought on because of the "weird" (EHD, drought, heat wave) year??

A buck in velvet in December, no. That is a hormone problem. But this strange year has definitely stressed deer. Look at all the reports of early antler drop. That is definitely stress-related.
